Let the countdown begin…

30 11 2008

So…once again it’s been awhile since I’ve posted. But during my blogging respite, I’ve been pondering a couple things I’d like to mention. Don’t expect anything too hard-hitting; they’re all pretty simple thoughts…

  1. First of all, I hope everyone had a very happy Thanksgiving! I finally wrapped up my gluttonous tour yesterday at the home of Keith’s paternal grandparents. We followed Thanksgiving dinner with a skating birthday party for his five-year-old neice, Halen. And yes, Keith and I, along with his brother and two sisters, skated like we were 5 ourselves again….until my left knee and my right hip began hurting. I might be a little sore today. What am I, 75?
  2. This is a tad overdue, but I want to congratulate Ryan and Christen on the birth of their second daughter, Olive Grace Byrd. She is beautiful, of course, and I can’t wait to see her in person.
  3. I hate sushi. Random, yes, but I must share this revelation. I have tried it multiple times from multiple locations, and the result is always the same. I freakin’ do not like it. And the sad thing is that I really want to like it, but I can’t. It’s really bland and fishy to me. In addition, I have a texture issue with it. I just hate the way it feels when I chew a big mouthful of it. Do not try to sway me. It will not work.
  4. I put up my Christmas tree, and I find it very lovely. I would really enjoy posting a picture of it, but I cannot find my camera battery charger. I think I may have left it in Tulsa. :(
  5. Retuned Guitars, Keith and his brother’s company, will have some very cool new guitars online for the holiday. Please check them out if you’re in the market for a guitar, or you know someone who is.

26 days til Christmas. Since I don’t have a pretty picture to show you of my tree, please enjoy this video clip from our favorite Christmastime movie, A Christmas Story.

And we ra-a-an, we ran all night and day…

The Route 66 Marathon is OVER, thank you Jesus! I am so proud of Keith for running 26.2 miles in 4 hours and 30 minutes. He was shooting for four hours, but I’m just happy he finished and is able to walk two days later. Check out his medals! It truly is amazing to me that people can run for so long. I ran the quarter marathon, which was only 6.5 miles, and it was a struggle. I did better than I thought I would though. It was cold, so my biggest concern was that my breathing would become erratic and my throat and lungs would start burning. But it didn’t happen. My legs were the only thing to tire, and I finished in 1 hour, 11 minutes, which is really great for me! Notice in the pic how my little medal pales in comparison to Keith’s. Haha! Keith’s sister, Anna, also went with us and ran the half marathon, which is 13.1 miles. It was her first half, and she did awesome. It was nice to have her there too to help me stay calm when Keith didn’t show at the finish line when I expected him. You wanna know what is completely psycho? I’m now thinking about running a half marathon myself. I’m sure it will be very tough, but there’s something about the racing that’s just addictive. Anyhow, I would like to thank my brand-new pair of $13 Injinji socks for keeping my feet almost blister free. Seriously, I impulsively bought the socks at the expo before the race, and I don’t regret it a bit. They’re pretty much just toe socks, but they’re nice and thick and much more attractive than the sparkly and striped varieties in the back of my sock drawer. Typically, if I run only 3 or 4 miles, it’s my blistered feet that make me stop. These socks really saved my tootsies. I recommend them.

Cheapskate

ipod-speaker-project

Ah, happy Saturday…finally. I apologize for the scant blog posts this week. I WILL do better this week. Anyhow, I saw this idea the other day on Treehugger.com. For a while now, I’ve been wanting speakers for my iPod, but just can’t seem to make myself buy them. I am not opposed to trying this, just for the hell of it anyway. It’s pretty self-explanatory. You need four paper cups, two for the stand part and two for the speaker part. You punch holes in the bottom of the “speaker” cups and thread your ear buds through there. Voila! It seems to be the same principle as the ever-popular “cup” phone. We’ll see how it works out.

In other news: I bought one of the Kings of Leon’s older albums, Aha Shake Heartbreak and it is making me very happy right now. Enjoy the weekend everyone!

A beard for every occasion

11 11 2008

I’ve really been wanting some felt garland to put on my Christmas tree this year. I could make it, but honestly, it will probably end up being another unfinished project to add to the pile. I’m just trying to be realistic here. If you’ve read some of my past posts, you know I’m a total fan of Etsy. So I decided to look there first for my garland. I just figured that if I’m too lazy to make it, I can at least buy it from someone who isn’t. So I searched for felt garland, which I found. But I couldn’t really focus on that for all the other felty items. I found felt quesadillas, felt cheeseburgers, felt vegetables, felt birds, and most awesome of all…felt beards! Yes, I found the most amazing felt beards in the world, handcrafted by imadeyouabeard. I’ve posted a picture of one of them below, but you really must check out the shop to see them all. They make me smile.

Ice baths and Pockets and Pockets

4 11 2008

The Tulsa marathon is right around the corner, and you may recall that Keith is running the entire thing, all 26.2 LONG miles. He’s been trying to get some long runs in, and tonight he ran 14.7 miles! (I am shamelessly proud of him.) He had to take an ice bath afterward in the hopes that he wouldn’t be as sore tomorrow. He did not enjoy it, to say the least. He would like for me to mention that Honey Stinger Energy Chews are awesome. He says they have a great, sweet honey flavor, almost like candy, and they really do give you an extra boost of energy. Anyhow, yay for Keith! He’s been training a long time for this one, and I’m proud.

I have an obsession with things in jars. I may have mentioned before that I have two jars of antique marbles, a jar of fossils, and a jar of seashells. I’m always on the lookout for new things to go in jars. At estate sales, I’m the one weirdo that picks up the jar of random junk (safety pins, beer caps, marbles, toy cars, etc., etc.) and wants it more than anything else in the house. Jars are like shadowboxes, except better. They can be stacked, placed on shelves, in windows or on tables. They just look cool to me. So there’s this traveling art exhibit called Pockets and Pockets. Basically, folks empty their pockets and the contents are put into 20 different labeled jars. The contents are then emptied into the main jars at Art House Gallery in Atlanta, GA. Steven Peterman is the artist. This is such a fascinating idea to me. According to their calendar, the upcoming events are all in Georgia. But don’t worry. If you want to participate, you can send a SASE to:
Pockets
309 Peters St. Unit 1
Atlanta, Ga 30313
And they’ll send you a participation kit. It’s on this week’s agenda.

Sweet

3 11 2008

I hope you all had a fabulous Halloween! We celebrated Halloween last night at a party held by our friends, Terry and Kailey. Keith and I dressed in very distasteful costumes, and joined a very spirited group of friends dressed in equally distasteful duds. Among us there was a Hannah Montana and Billy Ray Cyrus, a pregnant Britney Spears with her K-Fed, a “trailer trash” duo, Alice in Wonderland and the Mad Hatter, and an Amy Winehouse, complete with a plastic baggy of flour hanging out of her back pocket. There was plenty of music, drinks and food.

Speaking of food, the photo above is the candy corn that Keith MADE for us the other night. As I may have mentioned before, he’s quite the cook, and since he loves candy, confections are his specialty. So after much nagging from me (I LOVE candy corn), he got a recipe from Nosh With Me and whipped up a batch of those sweet kernels. I was amazed. They looked like the real thing to me, maybe a bit more rough around the edges, but who cares? They were delicious. Brachs has nothing on our little confectionery. Next up, lemon drops.
