lino-block printing, part one
9 06 2009
So, my friend Kristie bought me a linoleum block and a cutting kit for my birthday. At first, I didn’t know what it was, but when I figured it out, I was ecstatic. So, yesterday morning I carved my first design, and I just printed it on some blank cards with acrylic paint. I’m pleased with it. Sure, it could be better, but it’s not too shabby. Next time I’ll remember that more texture is ok, and also that whatever I carve will be backwards when I print it. That’s something that didn’t occur to me. Yes, I know it’s obvious.
AND, about the iPhone…considering they announced a newer, much cooler version will be available on June 19, I think I’m going to wait it out (even though my phone is in two pieces). I just hope I can make it to the store that day and get one before they’re all snatched up. That’s my biggest concern.

Let the countdown begin…
4 05 200924 days til I am the proud owner of an iPhone! I am counting the moments, so expect more annoying posts about it in the near future.
This weekend was full of rain and lots and lots of sleep. My car broke down on Saturday night, right after I got it back from the dealership for an oil change, and conveniently, an hour before I was supposed to be at work. Somehow I managed to get it back to the dealership, get a loaner and make it to work on time. I will find out the diagnosis tomorrow. I know it seems as if they did something wrong during the changing of the oil, but I’m thinking it’s likely coincidence. 150,000 miles on my car; could need a new fuel pump. fun times.
Keith went on a bike ride today with a guy I work with and some others. They rode in the rain, and pretty much, through the river. He brought me a pile of wet and muddy clothes home to launder. He’s going out again tomorrow, and I’m sure we’ll repeat the process.
That’s all I’ve got. I’m so boooorrrring right now. I hope the sun comes out tomorrow!

my phone catastrophe + tonight’s dinner
25 02 2009
A couple days ago, I dropped my phone on a tile floor, and it broke into a few pieces. I was able to put it back together, but there was a tiny piece of plastic that broke off, from where I had no idea. Today I found out. My Nokia flip phone fell apart in my hands at about 10 a.m. when the rest of the plastic piece inside that makes it flip open broke off. Apparently, a break at that part of a flip phone is detrimental because the phone kept giving me messages like, “emergency calls only,” “no smartcard detected,” and my personal favorite, “phone restricted, enter restriction code.” WHAT?! I drove to the AT&T store and tried to weasel my way into an early upgrade It didn’t happen. Basically, since I didn’t buy insurance, my phone can’t be replaced. If I buy a new one, my contract will start over, and I’ll once again be two years away from the iPhone. So…I have to use an old phone from one of Keith’s co-workers till my upgrade rolls around in May, May 28 to be exact. Oh yes, I know the exact day the iPhone will be mine.
In other news, Keith made this fantastic lamb burger tonight with salami, baby spinach and a roasted red pepper and olive spread. Muy delicioso.

Apparently I love vampires.
23 09 2008So don’t judge me, but it’s true. After weeks of hearing nonstop about how amazing Stephenie Meyer’s vampire books were, I finally gave in and began reading the first in the four-book series, Twilight. I had my doubts, and I really didn’t want to like them. But here’s to you, Kailey, Erin, Lacy, Corinne and all others who sang its praises, I’m enraptured in Twilight like maybe no other book I’ve ever read. I can’t really explain it, but the way Meyer describes one of the main characters, the vampire Edward Cullen, is just so vivid that I feel like I know him. In addition, these characters are so complex and perfectly flawed. There. I’ve justified my infatuation. Read the book. I think you’ll find it equally enthralling. By the way, my involvement with this book is also my excuse for the skimpy blogging lately. That and working my tail off to make extra money. I’m going to do better this week. I promise.
Also, I wanted to mention that Friday was apparently “National Talk Like a Pirate Day,” or something like that. There was a very interesting group of pirates along the street near my office. They held signs that said things like, “Honk=Argh”. Very cool guys. In contrast, there were some extremist Christian protesters across the street from our pirate buddies. (protesting some media convention because according to them, the media is a homosexual-loving outfit) They were holding very offensive signs that said things like, “Demo Fags,” and they had their children out there carrying these signs, of all things. They were also stomping on the American Flag, and wearing them from their belt loops so that they would drag the ground. Not cool guys. One of my coworkers, Mr. Ryan Byrd, who always has fabulous blog posts has the whole scoop here. You really should check it out because he took a LOT of great pictures of the pirates and the protesters.
And finally, no iPhone kids. Apparently, my phone isn’t eligible for upgrade until May. This means that I may purchase one from AT&T, but for a small fortune, rather than the $200 I was more than willing to shell out for the technological masterpiece. I can’t wait till May. We’re coming up with a plan. I will elaborate when we get the kinks ironed out.

Help! I have iPhone envy…
16 09 2008Ok, this photo has absolutely nothing to do with my post, but it just feels wrong to post without a photo and I’m too lazy tonight to go and look for something post-related. So for your viewing enjoyment, here’s a pic of an adorable calf that I took on a photo shoot one day. How can you not love his sweet face?
Now on to my real post…. I NEED an iPhone. This seriously has to be the coolest gadget I’ve ever seen or had the pleasure to use. I mean, what can’t it do? iTunes, check. Phone, check. Insanely fun and addictive games, check. speedy internet, check. Messaging, check. And seriously, the program download options are endless. It is the window to the world! My need became most evident to me over the weekend when hurricane Ike knocked out the power. I had no land line, no cable, no satellite, no radio, nada. And I was certain a tornado was about to blow me away. If only I’d had a handy dandy iPhone, I could have viewed up-to-the-minute weather coverage and saved myself and Keith the tornado-fearing spazfest that ensued. One of my iPhone-owning friends even downloaded a freakin’ flashlight. A FLASHLIGHT! And although I haven’t seen it yet, word on the street is that you can change the color of the flashlight from red to blue to green, and probably all colors of the rainbow. How cool is that? In addition, Keith and I need GPS to navigate Austin next month. So would I rather buy a GPS or an iPhone? Yep, you guessed it. iPhone, here I come. I can’t wait to hold you in my hands…
